Doctor Shopping Behavior and the Diversion of Opioid Analgesics: 2008-2012
SAI partnered with IMS Health and Computer Evidence Specialists to pursue a program of research on prescription opioid diversion. This project was sponsored by the Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy, and allowed estimates to be made for both the number of prescriptions and the number of morphine-equivalent milligrams diverted, by year, over the period 2008-2012, for each of twenty-one opioid molecules. These estimates are provided separately for states and zip-three areas. The evidence suggests a sustained and geographically widespread reduction in prescription opioid diversion when diversion is defined in terms of “doctor shopping” behavior.
